In the most simplest terms diversity and inclusion can be explained by diversity being the mix and inclusion is getting the mix to work well together. In broader terms, diversity is anything that can be used to differentiate groups and people from one another. This can be anything from life experiences, learning styles, personality types to race, gender, sexual orientation or even county of origin. These differences can be used to achieve quality teaching, learning and support services. Inclusion is used to describe a state of being valued, respected and also supported. The term is also used to describe the active, intentional and ongoing engagement with diversity. This also focuses on the need of every particular person and making sure that the right conditions are set for them to reach their full potential. Diversity is the balance in each individual in a certain group, whereas inclusion is the strategies that allow each person’s strengths to be welcomed and embraced. It is important to spread the rule of diversity and inclusion in the workplace in order to ensure that your employees feel comfortable and valued in your company. When a diversity and inclusion agreement is in place you have to make sure that staff, faculty and anyone going in or out of the office are actually practicing it.
